It is estimated that 4-5% of adults in the US have ADHD but few get a diagnoses or treatment. You may suspect that you have it or were maybe told you had it as a child but never got an explanation of what it means or how to work with your symptoms. Symptoms may have been missed during school years, or perhaps diagnosis and treatment options were just out of reach. Whether you already know you have ADHD or if you are looking for answers, there are options available!
Assessment and Diagnosis for Adults 18+ In the comfort of a private practice setting we will do a series of clinical interviews and assessments based on the most recent diagnostic criteria available to confirm ADHD. The process will include gathering information about psychosocial functioning and executive functioning such as time management, organization, planning, self-control and how symptoms might impact your personal and professional life. We will also rule-out common co-occurring "disorders", such as anxiety, depression, PTSD, Autism or other cognitive issues.
The assessment process takes place over 4-5 individual sessions (not including the cost of scoring data and compiling a report). Your insurance may cover all or a portion of the cost. Please keep in mind that the assessment is not intended to meet the need of any legal requirements or for obtaining Social Security benefits.
Counseling For ADHD Oftentimes adults first consider ADHD when they are at the pediatrician's office talking about their child. They are answering a questionnaire and are realizing that they can relate. Getting a diagnosis later in life can be quite surprising and there can be a period of adjustment with coming to terms with it. Or maybe it's relief--that there's finally an explanation for the things they have experienced. But now what?
There are several options available for managing and coping with symptoms of ADHD. Counseling can help with learning about ADHD, how your symptoms impact you and with treating secondary diagnoses like anxiety and depression. Counseling can help you process emotions, learn emotional coping skills, work with needed areas of executive functioning, make lifestyle changes, improve self-esteem and confidence and gain better control over health and general life satisfaction. In addition to counseling, many adults explore medication options. Please visit your primary care physician to discuss whether medication might be right for you.
